In the 18th century, Oxford, Connecticut, served primarily as a rest stop for farmers herding livestock from other parts of the state to the port city of New Haven. However, this small rural town sitting just about in the middle of Connecticut has come a long way since then. Today, it is considered a well-run, upper-middle-class community with one of the best school systems in the country. In fact, GreatSchools, a not-for-profit organization that evaluates and rates schools throughout the country, gives the Oxford Public Schools an “Excellent” rating and one of the highest scores in the state.

This did not happen randomly, according to Wayne Sullivan, president of Dumouchel Paper, the JanSan distributor for the Oxford school system. “The managers of the school district are a reflection of the whole town,” he says. “[And] before they make any purchases, they want to make sure the products selected are the best [and the] most cost effective and that the people who use them know how to use them properly.”

enviro-solutions-p1.jpgApparently, this is how the district administrators set out selecting green cleaning products for the restrooms in their schools. Brian Cossette, the regional manager for Charlotte Products/Enviro-Solutions, says the school district’s manager set up criteria for restroom cleaning products. The green cleaning products had to do the following:

  • Maximize the appearance of the school’s restrooms
  • Minimize or eliminate malodors
  • Protect the health of cleaning works using the products as well as of students and staff in the schools
  • Have minimal impact on the environment
  • Be cost effective.

“For some JanSan distributors, this might be a tall order,” says Sullivan. “However, I suggested they try the green restroom cleaning products manufactured by Charlotte Products/Enviro-Solutions. We have been very impressed with them and figured the [school] district would be as well.”

According to Cossette, the first order of business for any cleaning chemicals, whether for restrooms or anywhere else, is that they perform—enhancing the appearance of the restroom, removing contaminants from surfaces and fixtures, eliminating odors. “Although we place a very high emphasis on how the products protect health and the environment, if the product does not perform or is too costly, it just won’t make the grade,” he says.

“Certification to us means the products have been proven green,” says Jennifer Meek, director of marketing for Charlotte Products/Enviro-Solutions. “The only way to [demonstrate a product is green] is to have it certified. Most all of our restroom cleaning product as well as our floorcare and carpet care and our bio-enzymatic products are green-certified.”

Next, the Oxford Public School managers and custodial crew put the green restroom cleaning products to the test. After a lengthy review, this is what they determined:

“The products are second to none, traditional or green,” says Rosemary Hanson, director of finance for the school district. “And to top it off, the hands-on training by Wayne was exemplary. Both the products and training are exactly what we want for the Oxford schools.”
