News from Process Cleaning for Healthy Schools® (PC4HS)

The non-profit Process Cleaning for Healthy Schools® Consortium is pleased to report that its founder and president, Rex Morrison, will be speaking at the Oregon School Facilities Management Association (OSFMA) “Serving Schools with Pride” event in April. Representatives from Portland Public Schools (PPS) will also be attending.
OSFMA is “an organization of School Facilities Maintenance Professionals with the common goal of promoting and developing the highest degree of professionalism in the maintenance, operations, planning, development and construction of school facilities.”
On Wednesday, April 10, 2013, Mr. Morrison will present a two-part workshop at OSFMA:
1:00–1:45 pm - “Process Cleaning for Health Part 1, Concept”
2:00–2:45 pm - “Process Cleaning for Health Part 2, Implementation”

PC4HS will also be presenting at the National School Plant Management Association’s (NSPMA’s) 18th Annual Conference and Trade Show in 2013, on the theme: “Resilience - Rising Above The Rest” on April 27th-30th, 2013, at the Crowne Plaza Riverwalk in San Antonio, TX.
The overall NSPMA program will include sessions on:
- Ways to Improve Facility Services
- Improving Safety in K-12 Schools
- Slip and Fall Prevention – Safe Floors, Safe Kids
- Process Cleaning for Healthy Schools® (better, healthier custodial on a budget)

The National School Plant Management Association (NSPMA) strives to provide a forum for facility stakeholders responsible for the educational environment. It provides and promotes professional development and leadership, the exchange of information and ideas, as well as research and national dissemination of important findings and policies to improve the educational environment for all. Two-Day Assessment in CA School
In the coming weeks, Mr. Morrison is performing a two-day assessment at a major California School District (as a possible prelude to an implementation). An initial onsite two-day assessment provides the school district with a basic implementation outline based on cleanable square feet, building layout, special needs, current staff and desired reductions. Net savings — subtracting total program implementation investment and costs for district-wide deployment including labor, supply and equipment needs — are determined by this initial assessment and provided in writing and on Excel spreadsheets.
Cleaning Production System™ (CPS) Tips Booklet
In 2013, PC4HS will publish a Cleaning Production System™ (CPS) Tips Booklet – with generic backpack vacuum and spray-and-vac sections – in conjunction with Tips Products International. The booklet will be available in print and as a PDF for downloading. It will contain tips such as:
- Start with the right philosophy, and then identify the right process.
- Create flow - work like the tortoise not the hare.
- Get quality right the first time.
- Standardize tasks and processes, then keep improving and re-standardizing.
- People are visual creatures; take pictures or video of the ideal work, processes and procedures.
- Technology should serve the worker not vice versa - Investigate new technologies very carefully, but once proven, implement them system-wide almost w/o exception.
- Grow leaders from within who deeply believe in the philosophy of Cleaning for Health and teach it by word & deed.
- Establish a strong culture or DNA within your CPS.
- Respect your network of suppliers and partners - challenge them to grow with you.
- Clean the building yourself to understand the problem.
- Ask "why" several times and ask each member of your crew, to build consensus - decide slowly and implement quickly.
- Become a teaching and learning organization, and keep exposing your own mistakes and limitations so you can grow.

William R. Blumenthal is vice-president of the non-profit Process Cleaning for Healthy Schools® (PC4HS) Consortium. He is a 14-year veteran of the cleaning industry experienced in both internal and contracted operations. Blumenthal is currently Custodial Supervisor for Douglas County School District in Nevada - consisting of seven elementary schools, three middle schools, and two high schools serving more than 6,000 students - and during his tenure was instrumental in converting the district to PC4HS™. He is accomplished in all facets of custodial maintenance, with supervision and/or hands-on background in cleaning office complexes, floor care, construction cleanup, and client consulting. He has also worked to assist troubled youth and supervised a native-American work program crew.
Bill is also a CIMS ISSA Certification Expert (ICE) ready to provide training and consulting services to cleaning organizations interested in complying with and preparing to be certified to the Cleaning Industry Management Standard (CIMS).
