Why Do We Clean?

I wanted to share with you and your readers some thoughts I recently compiled that concisely address a common and often unanswered question in our industry.

If you ask a professional cleaner why their customers hire them, they will likely say that the majority of their clients have them clean for appearance.

This thinking can be compared to taking a shower or a bath simply for our appearance.

If this were the case, we would really only need to bathe when going out in public.  

We could bathe very quickly, as it wouldn't be necessary to wash areas of the body that didn't show.

Of course, we might stink, but then we could cover that up with a fragrance — much like we do with masking air fresheners in our homes and places of business.

We know that bathing improperly isn’t healthy and understand that it may not be long before health issues arise.

Somehow, it is not always clear that the same is true when cleaning a home or facility for appearance only.

Some examples of cleaning for appearance only are:

  • Not allowing for proper dwell times with disinfectants
  • Failing to rinse areas properly where disinfectants were used
  • Using an inferior vacuum cleaner that leaves contaminants deep in the pile
  • Using a soiled, disinfectant-soaked cloth over and over on multiple surfaces.

While the areas in these examples may appear free of unwanted matter following a cleaning event, we know that, in reality, they are not.

There are endless examples of cleaning for appearance only, none of which are healthy.

It can be said that cleaning for appearance only is detrimental to our health — personal, fiscal and environmental wellbeing.

With healthcare costs soaring and labor rates climbing ever higher, does cleaning for appearance only really save us time and money?

I am of the opinion that we should clean for health; by doing so, we will naturally achieve the desired appearance outcomes — saving time and money and reducing the stresses of rework in the process. - Randy Zielsdorf, national sales manager for Advanced Vapor Technologies LLC.
