EL CERRITO, CA — The custodian at Harding Elementary School does much more than keep the school clean and healthy, he helps mold inspiring young minds, according to the West County Times.
Darell Valentine, commonly known around the school as "Mr. V," takes an active role in students'' lives, from greeting them by name and helping them with their homework and studies, to starting a campus-wide can and bottle collection drive to fund the purchase of Harding T-shirts for underprivileged students, the story stated.
Valentine will be honored with a "You Make a Difference" Award from the West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD) Community Advisory Committee for Special Education at 7 p.m. Thursday at DeJean Middle School, the story noted.
According to the story, the award is intended to recognize those whose efforts, on behalf of students with special education needs, go beyond the ordinary.
Mr. V, who has worked at Harding Elementary for six years, was nominated for the honor by Barbara McIntyre, a kindergarten teacher at the school, the story added.
