Culinary custodian conducts extracurricular class

NORWALK, CT — The Nathan Hale Middle School head custodian is a master of several trades, including: Floor care; grounds care; and baking, according to The Hour.
Stanley Shuler, who performs routine custodial tasks during the day, trades his multi-tasking custodial hat for that of a chef once a month, the story stated.
According to the story, Shuler, through a program funded by Nathan Hale Middle School''s Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), conducts a culinary class for students who want to learn more about cooking or baking.
Shuler''s most recent class in April attracted 12 students eager to learn how to bake a cheesecake and a pumpkin pie, the story noted.
Shuler, who worked at Norwalk''s former Lighthouse Restaurant and attended culinary school years ago, said: "Even though I''m the head custodian, I love cooking. You can''t judge a book by its cover. Since I came here, I''ve been trying to work with the kids a little bit more."
Shuler, a five-year veteran at Nathan Hale, has been with Norwalk Public Schools for 15 years and previously taught a cooking class at Ponus Ridge Middle School, the story added.
