NEW YORK — A maintenance man aided in the capturing of a fugitive when he held an officer''s gun while said officer needed a free hand to handcuff the suspect, according to the New York Post.
Police say the suspect, Jeffrey McNair, who has 43 prior arrests for burglary, gun and drug charges, fled to a basement and attempted to disguise himself as a janitor when the maintenance man spotted him and went for help, the story stated.
The situation transpired after police spent an hour trying to capture a motorist who struck a taxi and a jogger, then fled on foot after hitting a van, the story noted.
Placido Contreras, who was praised by a New York City Police Department (NYPD) spokesperson for "adapting," claims he only held the gun for a moment, the story added.
The unnamed officer told Contreras: "I need some help here. Keep your eyes on him and shoot him if you have to."
