CHICAGO — UNITE HERE is scheduled to open its national convention in Chicago today as the organization continues a dispute regarding its core jurisdictions with SEIU, according to Beyond Chron.org.
The event, which was to be the perfect opportunity to celebrate five years of increased union membership, is UNITE HERE’s first national convention since 2004 and comes at a time when the future of both sides sits in the balance, the article reported.
“SEIU is trying to be the company union in our industries, so we are battling both SEIU and employers,” said UNITE HERE Local 2 President Mike Casey.
The debate is sure to escalate during this week’s event and could even determine which direction will prevail, stated the article.
