GULFPORT, MS — While students rejoice in the wonders of summer vacation, custodians in the Gulfport School District
are spending their days wiping down and cleaning up every inch of every building on all ten district campuses, according to WLOX-TV
While cleaning and maintenance crews work year-round to keep schools clean and healthy, summer is their most hectic and demanding time, the story stated.
Tom Hardaway, chief operations officer for the Gulfport School District, said: "We clean buildings from head to toe. When you think about clean, we talk about cleaning blinds, windows, etc. We bring [flooring] down to the bare tile and bring it back up with at least five coats of floor finish. Carpentry, painting, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), whatever projects we have set up for them, we tackle those during the summertime. If we have clean campuses, safe campuses, our students will take more care in helping us maintain our buildings."
The district custodians have just over two months to completely clean, disinfect and repair surfaces prior to the August 5 start of the school year, the story noted.
District workers are also tasked with lawn and landscaping maintenance, just another item to be added to the long list of seasonal specialty cleanings that occur while classes are not in session, the story added.
