Vista, CA With the growing interest in waterless urinal systems, facilities considering a no-water system need to make sure they know the basics about this technology. Below are some questions to ask before making a waterless urinal selection:
Am I allowed to install waterless urinal systems in my facility?
Virtually all jurisdictions within the United States permit the installation of waterless urinals.
Are there specific codes and standards to follow when installing a waterless urinal system?
Yes, there are state, local, and national codes. Your plumbing engineer or contractor should be aware of these.
We have an environmentally preferable purchasing program. Are waterless urinals included in this program?
Many environmentally preferable purchasing programs include and even recommend the installation of waterless urinals.
How much water can we expect to save with a waterless system?
Studies by the state of Massachusetts found that in a workplace with 1,000 males, waterless urinals would save approximately 1.6 million gallons of water annually. Typically, there is an annual savings of 20,000 to 45,000 gallons per urinal.
About how much money would we save on water and sewer charges with a waterless system?
The same study determined the cost savings amounts to about $21,000 based on 2008 water/sewer charges. Average savings per urinal: $200 to $350 annually.
How much do waterless urinals cost?
List prices range from about $200 to more than $500. Building owners and managers should be aware of the list pricing so as not to get overcharged for the fixtures.
Will we experience malodors with no-water urinals?
The University of CaliforniaLos Angeles (UCLA) conducted a study to determine if odor problems differed between waterless and traditional urinals. The researchers found there was little or no difference.
Is there much of a difference between the various no-water systems?
Yes and no. The technology for most systems is similar. However, the cylinder or trap systems vary considerably in life span and cost. Some last only a couple of months and may be the most expensive. Others last several months and cost very little.
