GARY, IN — More than a dozen Gary Community School Corporation custodians showed up at a recent school board budget and finance committee meeting to express their displeasure about getting laid off with only one day''s notice, according to the Post-Tribune.
A total of 41 custodians were told last Friday that there services would no longer be required the following Monday, the story stated.
A custodian who asked not to be identified, but claims she was only given one hour''s notice about her layoff, said: "They should have given us two weeks if not 30 days notice. They expected us to have a good enough spirit to come in and work on Friday, which I did. We have to come in and clean up the mess that''s accumulated. I feel that they feel we''re the lowest employees so they can do what they please."
Many of the recently laid-off custodians were laid off in June and brought back to ready the Gary Community School Corporation''s schools only a few days before the 2009-2010 school year started, the story noted.
School board member Michael Scott, who claims he had no knowledge of the situation, invited the custodians to discuss their concerns in detail at Wednesday''s personnel committee meeting, the story added.
