RIA and IESO complete HVAC fire-related particulate standard

COLUMBIA, MD – The Restoration Industry Association (RIA) and the Indoor Environmental Standards Organization (IESO) have announced the completion of the industry''s first standard for the identification of soot and char in heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems to determine impact from fire-related particulate, according to a press release.
According to the release, the standard, which took 16 months to develop, has undergone an IESO Consensus Body peer review and notification has been filed with the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
Tom Yacobellis, chairman of the standard sub-committee, said: "This standard will provide restoration professionals with an important tool when evaluating whether or not the interior surfaces of a mechanical system have been impacted by fire-related residues. It provides very specific inspection and sampling protocols and uses science to confirm their presence."
After it has been approved by the IESO Consensus Body, the standard will undergo a public review process through the ANSI, and will be presented at the Indoor Air Quality Association (IAQA) Annual Meeting and Indoor Air Expo in Tampa, Florida, on March 7 and at the RIA Convention & Exhibition in Atlanta on March 26, the release stated.
Char and soot were selected as indicators of fire related particulate because char is a common byproduct of fire and is easy to identify, the release added.
