EAST GRAND RAPIDS, MI — A concerned parent is gathering signatures for a petition to keep the custodians at East Grand Rapids Schools in house instead of outsourcing the positions, according to the Grand Rapids Press.
According to the story, parent Leanne Gusky said her son wouldn''t have made it through school without the support of the custodians.
East Grand Rapids Schools, which is contemplating privatizing the custodial departments of district schools to close a $2.5 million budget gap, could save upwards of $500,000 by outsourcing the positions, the story stated.
Gusky is urging parents to sign petitions to spare the 19 custodial jobs and attend the Board of Education meeting at 7 p.m. on April 26 at Wealthy Elementary School, the story noted.
Gusky said: "Residents could cover the $300-per-student shortfall by giving up a couple of lattes per week."
