Friday''s Ask the Experts question from a cleaning professional on the International Custodial Advisors Network (ICAN) "Ask the Experts" page: I am going to bid on a 20,000 sq.ft. building. Half of the building is carpet and the other half is VCT. I have not done a building this big before. My questions are, how long do you think this will take to clean, and is $20.00 an hour (my normal charge) too much or to little to be charging? It is just my husband and I that do the work. We do not have employees.
The answer:
At $20 an hour, you and your husband are making $10 an hour each as a wage. By the time you figure in your business operating costs and travel expense and the like, you are making less than if you worked for someone else without the grave responsibility of running a business.
If I misunderstood and the $20 is a man-hour rate so that you are actually charging $40 an hour for your total service, you are doing better. However, by now you should know...
