LONG BEACH, CA — The 2010 Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) Conference and Every Building Show opened June 27, and Wm R. Griffin, president of Cleaning Consultant Services Inc., was there to deliver us the goods.
An estimated 4,000 members attended the three-day event, which included educational presentations, meetings and a trade show with over 300 exhibitors.
Roughly 20 cleaning contractors and restoration companies exhibited at this year’s show, which was located at the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center.
BOMA has 17,000 members in 13 countries that own or manage over 9 billion square feet of commercial space.
Ben Stein, economist, author and humorist, was the keynote speaker and offered these tidbits of wisdom:

§ The challenges have never been greater than we face today. We are in a serious recession and although things are looking a little better, we don’t know for sure when it will end.

§ There is always a recovery and an end to bad times; it’s just slower in coming that we’d like.

§ Historically, double-dip recessions are rare, but it could happen.

§ Forget the Greek financial crisis, it won’t impact us.

§ There probably will be inflation in the future.

§ Without a miracle or investors from outer space, the cost of social security and Medicare will soon surpass our ability to pay for them.

§ We can’t count on government to solve our problems; we must learn to rely on ourselves.

§ The world has made tremendous progress on many fronts that have resulted in prosperity and a better life for everyone. Look back at history 50 to 100 years and you’ll see what I mean.

§ The country’s best days lie ahead.

§ The key to closing a sale is always price.
