BLOOMINGTON, IN – According to a recent survey, a growing majority of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) athletic departments are now making environmentally responsible and sustainable initiatives a priority, according to a press release.
The survey was conducted by ProGreenSports, a business venture dedicated to helping professional sports organizations become more sustainable and environmentally friendly, the release noted.
Fifty-two percent of survey participants described their environmental initiatives as a "high" or "very high" priority, which was an increase from 44 percent the previous year, the release stated.
According to the release, the study also found that 83 percent of the sport directors and managers surveyed said that they plan to place an even greater emphasis on environmentally sound and sustainable programs in the future.
"An uncertain return on investment was the key concern mentioned," said Stephen Ashkin, president of The Ashkin Group and Sustainable Dashboard Tool, LLC, a web-based tool that helps JanSan distributors measure fuel and energy use and other data in order to cut costs and become more sustainable.
"Unfortunately, many people still do not realize the [potential] cost savings that can occur when organizations operate in a more sustainable manner," Ashkin added.
