Friday''s Ask the Experts question from a cleaning professional on the International Custodial Advisors Network (ICAN) "Ask the Experts" page: I work at a large hospital were there are a lot of interior doors that have old floor finish on the kick plates. Could you tell me the best way to get the old finish off the plates?
If the kick plates are easy to remove from the doors (screws), remove and soak in a pail of properly mixed stripper solution. After the finish is loosened (this may take some hand scrubbing/agitation), they can be rinsed and reinstalled. If they are brass or stainless steel you may want to polish them with metal polish before reinstalling.
If removal is not practical, purchase an aerosol stripper designed to spray onto vertical surfaces and cling there long enough to allow the dwell time necessary to loosen the finish. You may end up doing some hand scraping/scrubbing. Be careful not to let ... — Lynn E. Krafft
