Grand View Media Group buys CM/Cleaning & Maintenance Management® parent
The parent company of CM B2B Trade Group™, which publishes CM/Cleaning & Maintenance Management® and CM/Cleanfax® magazines, was acquired on June 30 by Grand View Media Group, a subsidiary of EBSCO Industries Inc. of Birmingham, AL.

Besides publishing the two leading magazines for the building maintenance and cleaning industries, the CM B2B Trade Group produces CM e-News Daily!" and several websites which together have the highest visitor traffic of any Internet destinations for the building maintenance industries.

Karcher buys Castle Rock
Alfred Karcher GmbH & Co. acquired Denver, CO-based Castle Rock Industries for an undisclosed amount.

Castle Rock''s JanSan businesses include Windsor (commercial floor care), Prochem and Century 400 (professional carpet cleaning), TecServ (national service provider for JanSan equipment), and Graco (parts and squeegees).

Karcher is a family-owned firm that also manufactures cleaning equipment, especially high-pressure washers, vacuum cleaners, sweepers and scrubber-dryers.

Tennant expands in Europe
Tennant Co. has acquired Dutch outdoor cleaning-equipment manufacturer Hofmans Machinefabriek, which will merge with Tennant''s existing operation in the Netherlands.

Hofmans Machinefabriek generated revenues of roughly $7 million in the most recent fiscal year.

Senate kills national minimum wage hike
The U.S. Senate voted down a proposal to raise the federal minimum wage from $5.15 an hour to $7.25 an hour.

The bill, sponsored by Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-MA, garnered 52 votes, but needed 60 votes under a procedural agreement that Democrats who favor raising the minimum wage worked out with the Senate Republican majority.

Also in June, the House Republican leadership killed a similar bill to raise the minimum wage to $7.25 an hour.

Green standards set for hand soap
The EcoLogo Program and Green Seal Inc., which identify and promote JanSan products and services that are more environmentally responsible, have developed new, identical audit criteria for hand soap.

The initiative, which is a new standard for Green Seal and replaces a current EcoLogo standard, allows companies with environmentally preferable products to submit one application and receive both certifications.

The new standards do not apply to hand cleaners used in households, food preparation operations or medical facilities, nor do they cover anti-bacterial hand cleaners or hand sanitizers.

California proposes strict VOC limits for cleaning products
New volatile organic compounds (VOC) limits for consumer and institutional cleaning products have been proposed by the California Air Resources Board (ARB), a move that could lessen JanSan workers'' exposure to potentially harmful chemicals.

The new VOC limits were proposed based on results of the 2003 Consumer & Commercial Products Survey, and include the first-ever VOC limits for disinfectants and sanitizers.

According to ISSA, many of the proposed limits are overly aggressive and will have a significant detrimental impact on the industry, since it will be more costly to produce such strictly regulated products.

Ecolab buys English firm
St. Paul, MN-based Ecolab Inc. purchased Shield Medicare Ltd. — an English developer, manufacturer and marketer of industrial contamination control products — for an undisclosed amount.

The purchase of Shield, which has annual sales of $19 million, will enhance the company''s presence in Europe, according to Ecolab officials.


Preston goes from ServiceMaster to SBA
Former ServiceMaster executive vice president Steven Preston was sworn in July 10 as administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).

Preston, who was confirmed by the U.S. Senate by unanimous consent on June 29, succeeded Hector Barreto to become the 22nd administrator of the SBA.

NCL names new brand manager
Philadelphia-based National Chemical Laboratories Inc. has hired Curtis L. Gregg as NCL brand manager.

Curtis is responsible for product and program development, and also will oversee operations at the new NCL Training and Development Center in Philadelphia.

Rubbermaid promotes Singleton
Rubbermaid Commercial Products, a manufacturer of facilities maintenance products, promoted Scott Singleton to director of product marketing in the refuse and material handling division.

Singleton had worked at RCP in senior-level positions in product and channel marketing, with focus on material handling and utility refuse products.

Tornado names Kennedy to marketing post
Tornado Industries of Chicago has hired Jolynn Kennedy to head its marketing department.

Kennedy''s responsibilities at Tornado include preparing the company''s marketing strategies for the coming year and producing two newsletters.

Ashkin Group hires two
The Ashkin Group LLC, a JanSan consulting firm specializing in green cleaning, hired David Holly, a video and multi-media production expert, to oversee the development and implementation of new technology solutions; and Gisele McAuliffe, a communications professional experienced in cause-related public relations, to direct the group''s communications activities.

D & A Building Services adds to staff
D & A Building Services of Altamonte Springs, FL, hired 25-year JanSan veteran Laura Thompson as director of marketing and operations.

Thompson is responsible for overseeing D & A''s sales of interior and exterior cleaning services throughout Florida and the Midwest.

D & A also hired Kristina Wells as client services coordinator and William Acevedo as West Florida branch manager.

Pro-Link hires Leaman as sales VP
JanSan supply company Pro-Link of Canton, MA, hired Doug Leaman as vice president of sales.

Leaman has worked in the JanSan industry for more than 35 years, including 11 years as national sales manager for Triple S.

Starco tabs Russo as sales manager
Starco Chemical of East Rutherford, NJ, hired John Russo as regional sales manager.

Russo, who has more than 20 years of JanSan experience, will be responsible for sales in the Mid-Atlantic Region.

Spainhour picked as ServiceMaster CEO
ServiceMaster Co. named J. Patrick Spainhour chairman and chief executive officer.

Spainhour, a ServiceMaster board member and former CEO of Ann Taylor Stores Corp., had been serving as interim CEO since May, when prior CEO Jonathan Ward was forced to resign by the board.

Disney names Pepper of P&G as board chairman
John Pepper, former chairman and CEO of Procter & Gamble, has been named by the Walt Disney Company board of directors as non-executive chairman of the board, effective January 1.

Pepper, who has been serving as an independent Disney director, will succeed former Sen. George J. Mitchell, who has served as Disney chairman since March 2004.

Unger hires Vece, promotes Noonan
Unger Enterprises Inc. of Bridgeport, CT, hired Dave Vece as inside sales manager.

Vece is responsible for all inside sales activities, including management of the customer service and telesales departments.

Unger also promoted Ray Noonan from inside sales manager to Northeast regional manager.

G-P board picks new chairman
Joseph Moeller is now chairman of the board of Georgia-Pacific Corp, in addition to his roles as president and CEO.

Moeller succeeded A.D. "Pete" Correll as board chairman in June, just as he replaced Correll as CEO last year.

Betco hires three
Toledo, OH-based Betco Corp. hired Derek Taylor as vice president of corporate accounts, Jared Parseghian as corporate accounts field specialist, and Dee Hobbs as a regional manager working with distributors in northern Illinois and southwestern Wisconsin.
