Berry sets mission for CIRI council
Michael Berry, Ph.D., former deputy director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and author of Protecting the Built Environment: Cleaning for Health, is the new executive director of the Scientific Advisory Council of the Cleaning Industry Research Institute (CIRI).
Berry created a plan for the Council''s 2006 activities, including:
- Establishing a scientific research and analysis framework to define “what is clean?”
- Creating a database on the CIRI website to catalog existing research.
- Conducting a summer workshop to prepare a comprehensive “State of Cleaning Science” report for industry review and publication.
- Preparing a three-year strategic information collection and research plan.
SDA elects JanSan execs to board
The Soap and Detergent Association Board of Directors appointed eight senior executives from the cleaning product and chemical industries during its 2006 Annual Meeting and Industry Convention in Boca Raton, FL.
Newly elected to the board were:

Unger names president
Unger Enterprises Inc., Bridgeport, CT, promoted Mark Unger from chief operating officer to president.
As president, Unger is responsible for managing, leading and implementing strategy for the company''s professional division worldwide, and is responsible for building professional product sales and distribution channels globally.
The son of founders Henry and Barbara Unger, Unger''s involvement with family-owned Unger Enterprises spans most of his lifetime and includes positions as vice president of sales and marketing and chief operating officer.
Tornado hires Williams as rep
Chicago-based cleaning equipment manufacturer Tornado Industries hired Jarrett Williams to represent the company in Alabama, Georgia and central Tennessee as a manufacturer''s rep.
Williams has worked in the JanSan industry for more than 13 years.
C&D appoints marketing exec
JanSan manufacturer Church & Dwight Co. Inc., Princeton, NJ, named Bruce F. Fleming chief marketing officer.
In the newly created position, Fleming will oversee the marketing of JanSan brands such as Arm & Hammer®, and will be responsible for the company''s advertising and market research functions.

Self-cleaning restrooms: Germ-free without janitors
Disinfecting restrooms with harsh chemicals could become a custodian''s chore of the past with the development of self-cleaning coatings for restroom surfaces.
University of New South Wales Professor Rose Amal, leader of the ARC Centre for Functional Nanomaterials research team, is seeking to apply the tiny particles of titanium dioxide currently used on outdoor surfaces — such as self-cleaning windows — to restroom surfaces, eliminating the need for disinfectants and other chemicals.
Amal and her team say that large-scale production of the nanoparticles is only a year away.
Atlanta''s high-tech toilets replace custodians
Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) is installing 12 high-technology, self-cleaning toilets at the Five Points station downtown, at a total cost of $1.1 million.
The German-engineered, self-cleaning, automatic toilet bowls retract into the wall, where they are washed, disinfected and dried while the floor is automatically rinsed.
Instead of three full-time custodians, the new toilets will require only one part-time worker to do occasional maintenance — saving up to $75,000 a year.
Self-cleaning toilets flush away public defecation?
Based on research in Boston, Seattle and London, a public toilet advocacy group called PHLUSH has recommended that Portland, OR, install self-cleaning restrooms to alleviate the problem of human waste littering its Old Town-Chinatown neighborhood.
PHLUSH wants to see a public-private partnership foot the bill for automated, self-cleaning public toilets that cost $250,000 each.
ISSA leads creation of FSP standards
The ISSA, related associations and certification programs, and a group of standards committees began drafting a consensus-based Quality Management Standard for facility service providers (FSPs) in mid-February.
The new standard will:
- Apply to cleaning organizations as a whole, as opposed to specific personnel, programs or products.
- Be “non-prescriptive” and will not require the use of specific cleaning processes or products.
- Afford organizations flexibility in meeting its parameters.
- Recognize and compliment existing industry standards and certification programs.
The Quality Management Standard will be based on universally accepted management principles identified through a consensus-building process over the next seven to 11 months.
George Foreman aims to ‘Knock-Out’ cleaners
Marketing for George Foreman''s Northlake, IL-based Knock-Out™ line of environmentally friendly JanSan products will target commercial cleaners and government purchasers.
The products — including all-purpose, glass, carpet and kitchen cleaners — use natural ingredients and don''t require warning labels.
Green Seal, ECP set soap standards
The Environmental Choice Program (ECP) and Green Seal are collaborating to develop criteria for certifying hand soap.
The standards will replace older certification standards developed in 1997.
SDA to unveil cleaning products websites
The Soap and Detergent Association has set a June launch date for "SDA Science" (www.SDAscience.org), a website showcasing the scientific, human health and environmental safety of cleaning products and their ingredients.
The SDA also plans to create a sustainability website highlighting the sustainable development and product stewardship activities of its member companies in the cleaning product and oleochemical industries.
Enviro-Solutions, Kaivac get Green Seal approval
Four floor care products manufactured by Ontario, Canada-based Enviro-Solutions have been certified by Green Seal: ES 82, ES 85, ES 90C and ES 97.
KaiO, a multi-purpose cleaner manufactured by Hamilton, OH-based Kaivac Inc., has also earned certification.
