How did you get your start in the cleaning & maintenance industry?
J&J Janitorial Services has been operating as a family-owned business since 1986 in Glendora, CA. The company owners are twin brother and sister, Joanne and James Livolsi. J&J Janitorial began as a window cleaning company and residential cleaning business. In 1988, they bought out Jimmy’s Window Cleaning, and became J&J Janitorial Services, a name their father originated for them. Their cousin, Joy, made the logo for the company, which later went into their first phone book advertisement.

Joanne and James did all the work themselves for the first five years of operation. In 1991, business opportunities for expansion came about and they began to hire a staff of qualified service personnel. Currently they have a staff of 48, including their brother Mark.

Like most small businesses, they have had their trials and tribulations to overcome. In 2006, their cousin Bill Meeks — who works as a CFO for a real estate company — visited them to help restructure the company and saved it from closing.

What are your current duties?
J Twins Inc. was established as an S corporation in January 1999. Joanne is president of the corporation and James is vice president.

What responsibilities are the most challenging?
Several responsibilities prove to be challenging for Joanne and Jim. Keeping up with the rules and regulations of running a business is one. Expenses such as supplies and fuel, taxes, liability insurance and workers’ compensation costs, going up are also tough for them. Trying to fit a budget for the company and troubleshooting problems with staff are also challenging.

What is your favorite/least favorite part of your job?
Joanne’s favorite part of the job is closing a big account. Her least favorite is having to let employees go.

Jim’s favorite aspects of the job are the flexible hours and being his own boss. Being on call 24/7 is his least favorite part of the job.

Tell us a bit about your personal life.
Joanne loves to exercise. She also works another job part-time as a personal trainer. In her free time she goes to the movies and travels.

Jim is a movie enthusiast and loves classical music, the beach and live shows. He also values time spent with loved ones.
