As the 2009 ISSA/INTERCLEAN® North America trade show in Chicago was my first big industry event, I was somewhat unsure what to expect.
I had spoken with various industry professionals to gauge what cleaning industry trade shows are all about, but it is often difficult for one to explain the ins and outs of an ever-evolving trade show, not to mention the depth and magnitude of our industry''s biggest show … ISSA/INTERCLEAN.
Needless to say, I was awestruck by the sprawl of top industry players, publications, certification bodies and lesser known — yet equally important — companies when I walked onto the convention floor.
Before starting in this industry a few years ago, I never understood how large the cleaning industry was, nor would I have ever imagined a three-day trade show would be dedicated to educate those involved.
But, after experiencing this particular show, I now have a better grasp on how important this industry is as well as its dedication to education and product innovation.
Before attending the show, I was well-aware that the notions of touchless and green would be on display.
However, I was unaware just how much these buzzwords would be in my face at the show — so to speak.
The ability to interact with the latest product offerings was second only to the networking opportunities the trade show fostered.
Putting It To Work
Being able to use and demo the products I research and write about every month in the fine pages of CM/Cleaning & Maintenance Management and finally putting faces to the personalities I often converse with was priceless.
I am sure you can all remember your first industry trade show — anticipation and excitement give way to nervous energy and sweaty palms.
After walking the show, experiencing the industry in a new light and networking with industry professionals, I would certainly call the 2009 ISSA/INTERCLEAN North America trade show a success — at least from an up and coming industry junkie''s point of view.
