The Ecologo team is proud to announce that its very own eco-label is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. In the last Sustainability Newsletter, we reported growth in the U.S. marketplace and a new partnership with the Chlorine Free Products Association
(CFPA). It has been an exciting 20 years for EcoLogo, even right from its very beginning.
As some of you may or may not know, EcoLogo is North America’s oldest multi-attribute eco-labeling program and is a founding member of the Global Ecolabeling Network
, helping to improve and develop international standards for environmental labels. Launched in 1988 as the “Environmentally Friendly Products Program” — part of a Canadian national “Green Plan” — the program was later renamed the “Environmental Choice Program.” The first product-specific criteria to be launched was in 1989, growing to 25 standards in 1995. This is the same year TerraChoice Environmental Marketing
began managing the program, helping it grow to be recognized along the likes of the U.S. Government’s ENERGY STAR Program
. In 2003, criteria documents reached 100, with 3,000 products certified. The name EcoLogo replaced Environmental Choice and the program expanded into the U.S.
The EcoLogo Program is now widely used around the world and throughout North America with more than 120 criteria documents, over 300 licensees and more than 7,000 certified products. Government purchasers from states, provinces and cities like New York, Illinois, Florida, California and Ontario are accepting EcoLogo along with Green Seal products as certified cleaning solutions. EcoLogo’s success is due in large part to the producers, manufacturers, suppliers, retailers and distributors of greener products who decided that saying they’re green just wasn’t good enough.
On behalf of the EcoLogo team, thank you for the last 20 years. Here’s to a greener, cleaner future.
