SCRANTON, PA — The Pittston Area School District
has reached a tentative settlement of a lawsuit filed by a maintenance man who alleged he was demoted for speaking about problems within the district, according to The Times Leader.
Thomas Rome filed suit against the district in 2009, alleging he was transferred from his position in the district''s primary center to a less desirable post at the kindergarten center because he had exposed problems, the article stated.
Rome claimed former superintendent Ross Scarantino and several school board members took the action to retaliate against him because he had "blown the whistle" to expose problems with topsoil the district purchased for its athletic fields, the article noted.
According to the article, the suit also alleged district officials were unhappy because he had contacted the federal wage board to report the district had failed to pay overtime to an employee.
