CRYSTAL LAKE, IL — A norovirus outbreak at three McHenry County nursing homes has sickened 131 people, sent eight to the hospital and caused some of the long-term care facilities to refuse new admissions, according to the TribLocal.
Health officials were made aware of the spike in cases early this week and those affected include not only residents at the nursing homes, but staff as well, the article noted.
"Any staff members with symptoms have been sent home and some of the facilities are refusing new customers," said Mary Lou Ludicky, county communicable disease coordinator.
"In general, the numbers are decreasing. We are hopeful things will get back to normal and under control soon," Ludicky added.
In addition to sending staff home, containment efforts include posting signs at the entrance doors making visitors aware of the outbreak, providing hand sanitizer and only allowing staff to care for the same residents, the article stated.
