CIMS-GB Certification Included in New LEED: EBOM Draft
Lincolnwood, IL, USA—ISSA’s Cleaning Industry Management Standard for Green Buildings (CIMS-GB) program has been included in the recently released draft of proposed revisions to the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Existing Buildings: Operations and Maintenance (EBOM) standard. Inclusion in the final version would allow companies with CIMS-GB certification to directly assist customers in earning credits toward LEED recognition.
“The inclusion of CIMS-GB in the new draft of LEED: EBOM is clear recognition that ISSA’s program has earned the respect of the building operations, facility management and sustainability industries,” said ISSA Director of Facility Service Programs Dan Wagner. “CIMS-GB certified organizations are subject to a rigorous third party assessment, which provides end customers with assurance that their cleaning service provider is committed protecting the environment and prepared to partner with them in the LEED certification process.”
Specifically, using a CIMS-GB certified cleaning service provider has been specified as a way a facility can demonstrate compliance with the Indoor Environmental Quality Credit for implementing a “high performance cleaning program.” Under the new draft, a facility will have to be cleaned by a CIMS-GB certified organization to achieve the credit. The specific proposed wording is as follows:
“During the performance period, demonstrate that the project is being cleaned by a cleaning service provider that has earned certification under ISSA’s Cleaning Industry Management Standard for Green Buildings (CIMS-GB). The certified cleaning services may be provided by either an in-house custodial staff or may be contracted out using a certified building service contractor.”
The CIMS-GB specification is one of a number of proposed changes to the LEED: EBOM standard. Interested parties are encouraged to review the revised draft, available at The Ashkin Group’s online portal: www.ashkinleedeb.com
. Public comments can also be submitted through December 31, 2010 Publication and release of the final version is expected to occur in 2012.
CIMS and CIMS-GB are nationally recognized certification programs that provide third-party verification for cleaning operations that seek to develop a comprehensive green cleaning program and offer sustainable cleaning services. The CIMS-GB framework is designed to improve performance in the areas of sustainable product usage, improved occupant wellness, asset preservation, and waste diversion. This all-inclusive green building and service standard provides facility managers, building owners, and service providers a concise framework for identifying and implementing a sensible and measurable green building operating system that is flexible enough to apply to all sizes and type of buildings.
