BATON ROUGE, LA — Thomas "Doc" Hearl''s job at Park Ridge Elementary is through a temporary agency; while he''d love to get a real job with the school system, he hasn''t had much luck, according to The Advocate.
Though he''s played with the big names of country music, including opening for Doug Kershaw, Tim McGraw, Dottie West, Joel Sonnier and Tab Benoit, Hearl didn''t want to spend a career on the road away from his family, the article noted.
According to the article, he''s written and played music, put together bands and watched them fall apart while working as a guard on an armored truck, a carpenter, meat cutter, computer programmer, tobacco field hand, shipyard and construction worker, truck driver, medical records technician and, now, school janitor.
Though a temporary worker, Hearl fills the traditional position of school janitor as changer of fluorescent tube lights, mopper of spills, sweeper of dirt, adjuster of thermostats in super-heated rooms and hallway confidant to students and teachers, the article stated.
"He''s a good employee," sad Principal Dave Carter of his temporary janitor.
"He goes way beyond the call of duty. I''d hire him in a heartbeat," Carter added.
