Hard Surface Cleaners
The EcoLogo Program from TerraChoice Environmental Marketing is working on the second draft of its Hard Surface Cleaners Standard (CCD-146), which is due out for individual and stakeholder comment in December 2010.
This revised Hard Surface Cleaners Standard will recognize a wide variety of environmentally preferable, chemical-based hard surface cleaners, including: Bathroom cleaners, boat and bilge cleaners, cleaners for cooking appliances, degreasers, dish detergents, general purpose cleaners, industrial cleaners, vehicle cleaners and window and glass cleaners.
Other types of cleaners may also be added to the standard pending stakeholder feedback.
The EcoLogo Program has also made an effort to achieve greater harmonization with this standard and other programs including Green Seal Inc., the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency''s (EPA) Design for the Environment (DfE), the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute and the Information-based Environmental Label (IBEL) being developed by ISSA.
This standards development process is being supported by Jack Geibig, director of the University of Tennessee Center for Clean Products and Clean Technologies, leaders in the development of environmental product and material standards.

Biologically-based Cleaning And Degreasing Compounds
A 30-day stakeholder comment period was launched in October to solicit feedback on the scope and direction of the revision process for EcoLogo''s Biologically-based Cleaning and Degreasing Compounds Standard (CCD-110).
EcoLogo is now in the process of reviewing the feedback received to produce the next draft.
Biologically-based products are used in many different applications, from hard surface cleaning to holding tank and septic tank additives.
They differ from their chemical counterparts mainly in that they degrade the organic material in soils, drain clogs, etc.
They are also capable of removing the non-visible residues that coat surfaces and cause rapid re-soiling and odors.
EcoLogo-certified biologically-based products offer environmental benefits including reduced use of material resources, enhanced biodegradability and reduction of pollutant emissions like volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
These products contain microbial cultures as their main active ingredient that promotes microbial digestion of hydrocarbons, organic contaminants and other undesirable substances.
They may also contain additives such as surfactants and buffers that increase their effectiveness.
