J.C. Restoration Employee Honored for $1 Million in Burn Camp Fundraising

Tom Taff receives Venerable Mary Potter Humanitarian Award from Hospital Foundation

Tom Taff, a project manager with J.C. Restoration’s structure division, recently gained recognition for his fundraising work since 1998 on behalf of a children’s camp for burn survivors.

Taff received the Venerable Mary Potter Humanitarian Award from the Little Company of Mary Hospital Foundation. He accepted the award on Feb. 5 before 700 people at the foundation’s Crystal Heart Ball at the Field Museum in Chicago.

Since 1998, Taff has led the collection of $1 million for Bucks For Burn, an astonishing grassroots effort that has enabled hundreds of children to attend, free of charge, a camp for burn survivors in Lake County, Illinois. He has also spearheaded about $110,000 in fundraising for a host of other causes in that time.

Previous awardees have included humanitarian leaders such as Christopher Kennedy, Lisa Ling, Deloris Jordan, Martin Ozinga Jr. and Wally Phillips.

“He certainly mirrors the mission of Little Company of Mary and the foundress, Mary Potter, who sought to provide compassionate care to the sick and dying," said Maureen Harrigan, Special Events Coordinator and Auxiliary for the Little Company of Mary Hospital Foundation.

Only one year into a 16-year career with the Chicago Fire Department, Taff suffered a near-fatal fall from the third floor of an apartment building. The harrowing 1991 incident left him with second- and third-degree burns on his legs.

During his rehabilitation in a University of Chicago burn unit, Taff was inspired by the courage of two young boys who likewise had suffered burns. Several years later, Taff drew upon the experience to launch the Bucks for Burn Fundraiser.

“Once you see the courage these kids have, and the happiness in their eyes, it makes you want to do more for them,” said Taff.
