SALEM, OR — Almost 200 classified employees in the Salem-Kaiser School District will lose their jobs as a result of money saving layoffs, according to the Statesman Journal.

As many as 28 custodians and nine maintenance workers will not return be returning to their jobs next year, leaving some schools without custodians, the article stated.

According to Luis Caraballo, Salem-Keizer director of facilities, schools will be forced to share custodial crews instead of having a dedicated staff at each school.

Maintenance, which was cut back by 17 percent, will need to scale back work that isn''t essential for the safety of the students, the article noted.
