WASHINGTON — The World Toilet Organization (WTO) has kicked-off a competition that seeks the best public toilet designs in the world, according to The Standard.

The aim of the competition is to find a design that is functional, hygienic and reduces the need for potable water when flushing the units, the story stated.

Thirty winners will be awarded prizes in various categories when the deadline of submission, which is in July, has been reached, the story noted.

Organizers of the competition said: "One of the reasons for the lack of innovations in low-cost toilets is that new designs of low-cost toilets are unlikely to be patentable or have great commercial value."

According to the article, a similar competition held in India last year led to over one million safe and sanitary public restrooms being erected in low-income communities.

The best design will be showcased in the World Toilet Summit and Expo in November this year in China, the story added.
