TORONTO — Another death linked to the Clostridium difficile (C. diff) outbreak in Ontario hospitals was announced on Tuesday, bringing the death toll up to 21, according to The Vancouver Sun.
The death was the fourth at the hospital in Welland, Ontario, the article stated.
According to the release, prior to Tuesday’s announcement, Niagara Health System officials had said the number of deaths had not changed in recent days.
"What we''re really concerned with is the incidents of infection. It''s not unusual to see a death where C. diff is present. That doesn''t inform us of anything. What does inform us is the spread of C. diff — and that''s what we''re trying to combat," said ministry spokesman Andrew Morrison.
A total of seven hospitals in the province are still battling the outbreak, with the sites included within the Niagara Health System totaling more than 70 confirmed cases, the article noted.
