TEXAS CITY, TX — A custodian at the College of the Mainland (COM) was seriously injured over the weekend, according to a report from COM campus police.

Custodian Carmen Sauceda was discovered by two campus police responding to a fire alarm in the Technical Vocational Building, the report stated.

According to the report, Sauceda was found in one of the classrooms surrounded by ceiling tile debris and cleaning equipment; Sauceda was taken to the University of Texas Medical Branch''s John Sealy Hospital where she was listed in serious condition.

COM Campus Police Chief E.W. Carr was in immediate contact with the Galveston County District Attorney''s office in order to begin a full and independent investigation, the report noted.

Preliminary investigation has shown that Sauceda may have lost her balance while returning cleaning equipment and fallen from a heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) platform above the ceiling, falling the equivalent of two floors, the report added.

The college has established a fund for Sauceda through the Foundation Office to help alleviate any medical expenses she may incur, the report concluded.
