Former janitor charged in church fire

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — A disgruntled former janitor has been charged with setting a fire that caused roughly $50,000 in damage to the United Methodist Church, according to the Duluth News Tribune.

Robert Evans Shepard, 66, committed a string of acts of vandalism at the church, culminating in the fire that was set in a closet, the article stated.

According to the article, authorities report that Shepard threw eggs at the window of the pastor''s office; ran over a handicapped parking sign; and left a red-painted doll stabbed with a kitchen knife on the church baptismal font.

Shepard has been charged with first-degree felony arson and remains in the Itasca County Jail, pending bail, the article noted.
