GAYLORD, MI — Nineteen custodians in the Gaylord Community School (GCS) district are without jobs after the board voted to privatize custodial services district-wide, according to the Gaylord Herald Times.
GCS entered in to a three-year contract with Grand Rapids Building Services (GRBS) on August 29, the article stated.
According to the article, GRBS hired 11 full-time and 11 part-time employees to clean buildings throughout the district.
The district expects to save approximately $1 million in cleaning costs by privatizing custodial services, with much of the savings coming from no longer having to pay health care or having to pay in to the Michigan school retirement program, the article noted.
