ALPINE, UT — Timberline Middle School dedicates a week of appreciation for its custodians, whose efforts are often overlooked and underappreciated, according to the Daily Herald.

Glen Vawdrey, the middle school''s head custodian, says that Custodian Appreciation Week, now in its second year, began as a joke, the article stated.

"I was cleaning up after a secretary appreciation dinner and started thinking, ''it seems like there''s an appreciation day or week for everyone except custodians,''" said Vawdrey.

"During Sunday dinner that weekend I visited with my son, who is a teacher at Lone Peak High School, about it and he suggested that we make our own signs for a custodian appreciation week," Vawdrey added.

According to the article, after the custodial staff did just that, Vawdrey and his fellow custodians began receiving thank-you notes and other goodies from the staff and students.

After last year''s staff dinner, Vawdrey admitted that the custodial staff had made the signs for their appreciation week themselves and the counseling department suggested the school officially add custodian appreciation to the school calendar, the article noted.

"Our custodians are such good guys," said school counselor Colleen Roundy.

"We want the kids to know that they need to clean up their own messes and we encourage the students to thank the custodians for keeping this school spotless," Roundy added.
