LOUISVILLE, KY — Final approval has been given by the New Albany-Floyd County School Board to outsource custodial services district wide, according to the Courier-Journal.
As of January 1, the district will enter in to a $2.15 million contract with Sodexo Inc. for daily cleaning and maintenance, the article stated.
According to the article, the decision to outsource will save the district nearly $800,000 over the three years of the contract by moving more than 60 custodians off the district payroll.
Before Monday''s vote, Timothy Lackey, a custodian at Floyds Knobs Elementary School, made one last appeal to change the board''s mind.
"Outsourcing will hurt students, particularly elementary school students," said Lackey.
"We''re the ones that clean up behind them, we follow them to the clinic with trash cans when they''re sick, we stop in the hall and tie their shoes ... and I don''t think you’re going to get that with an outsourcing service," Lackey added.
