NOVATO, CA — An outbreak of norovirus has prompted Marin County public health officials to quarantine Country Villa Novato Healthcare Center, the county''s largest nursing home, according to the Marin Independent Journal.

Family and friends of residents have been instructed not to visit by County Villa''s managers, and residents have been instructed to remain in their rooms, the article stated.

According to the article, since the outbreak began on November 6, nearly 80 residents and staff members have become ill.

Rebecca Ng, chief of Marin County''s Division of Environmental Health Services, wasn’t informed of the outbreak until Friday, the article noted.

The department is normally notified immediately when gastrointestinal illnesses occur at nursing homes so the facilities'' kitchen can be inspected for possible sources of contamination, the article added.
