HESPERIA, CA — A custodian''s use of the Heimlich maneuver saved a fifth grader''s life, according to the Hesperia Star.

Opal Moore, a night custodian at Topaz Preparatory Academy working day shifts to cover for an injured coworker, was patrolling the lunch room when she noticed something out of the ordinary, the article stated.

According to the article, Moore noticed a student running for a trash can, looking like she was going to throw up.

Moore was the first to reach the child, grabbing her from behind and performing the Heimlich maneuver twice in order to dislodge the piece of food that had gotten stuck in her airway, the article noted.

In December, Moore was honored by the Hesperia Unified School District''s Board of Directors for her quick thinking, the article added.
