Custodian a victim of an alleged hate crime

SPRINGFIELD, IL — Police are searching for a man who allegedly attacked a school custodian and called him a racial epithet while he was out salting a parking lot, according to The State Journal-Register.

The victim, a black man who works as a custodian for Lanphier High School, was walking back toward the school with his equipment when three men approached him, the article stated.

According to the article, one of the men punched him in the back of the head and said, "What you gonna do, [epithet]?"

When the custodian called for school security, the three men surrounded him and the custodian said he pulled a pocketknife to defend himself, the article noted.
