IRVINE, CA — The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) announced that, after a four-year battle University of California at Irvine (UCI) has not only stopped outsourcing janitorial services, but 94 custodial workers have been officially classified university employees and recognized AFSCME Local 3299 members, according to OC Weekly.
Previously, the workers were classified as private contractors of ABLE, qualifying them for less pay and fewer benefits than other university auxiliary staff, the story stated.
The deal to cease outsourcing was reached last year, and the deadline for the hiring of custodians as full-time UCI employees was mid-April, the story noted.
Local 3299 President Kathryn Lybarger said, "This is a historic moment for our union. It''s a culmination of joint efforts by workers and their families, students, community supporters and our members."
