Carpet Cleaning Technicians Can Help Sell Homes

Mukilteo, WA – With the Spring home buying season approaching, real estate agents agree that homes have to look good and smell good in order to sell.

Taking this a step further, a study by the American Lung Association points out that buyers often believe a home is “unhealthy” if it has an odor problem.

And in what continues to be an anemic real estate market, sellers should consider anything that can help make a sale, including making sure their homes are odor free.

There are several things carpet cleaning technicians and other cleaning professionals can do to help home sellers eliminate odors and market their homes, according to Mark Baxter, an engineer and product manager with U.S. Products, manufacturer of professional-grade hot-water carpet extractors.

Among his key suggestions are the following:
• Be honest. “Most real estate agents are uncomfortable about telling [home] sellers their home has an odor problem. Someone has to do it. It might as well be the person who probably can rectify the problem.”
• Eliminate smoke odors. Even smokers are turned off by secondhand smoke odors. Cleaning everything—carpets, upholstery, walls, fixtures, and ceiling—may be necessary to remove the problem.
• Deal with pet odors. If pet odors permeate upholstery, the furniture may have to be removed. If odors are in carpets, as long as they have not seeped into padding and the flooring below, they often can be eradicated with hot-water carpet extraction.
For eliminating carpet and upholstery odors in homes as well as offices and elsewhere, Baxter suggests using hot-water extractors.

“Hot water, 212 degrees (F) at the wand tip, helps break up the smoke molecules that can cause odors for easier extraction from fabrics.”

He also recommends using machines with variable psi. “This allows for cleaning more delicate fabrics as well as deep cleaning carpets. [And] if problems persist, an ozone generator may need to be called in…once other cleaning methods have been performed.”
