ORANGEBURG, SC — Custodians in the Orangeburg Consolidated School District Five are worried they may lose their jobs to a private contractor, according to The Times and Democrat.

While no official decision has been made, the district is looking at the possibility of hiring a contractor to take over custodial services and grounds management, the article stated.

According to the article, many employees have expressed concern over their ability to provide for their families should the district move towards privatizing services.

"This is real preliminary. All we’re doing is gathering information to share from an informed viewpoint," said District Chief Financial Officer Donnie Boland.

"We''re looking for a way to increase efficiency and effectiveness while saving money," Boland added.

One custodian said the group has asked the district if employees would be able to keep their current benefits, but they have not heard back from district officials, the article noted.
