MIAMI — The city has laid off or fired at least five janitorial workers and given their work to an outside contractor, according to the Miami Herald.

Three of the workers were fired after a surveillance camera caught them punching the time cards of other workers, while the other two were laid off, the article stated.

According to the article, a few current and former employees who know the fired employees paint a different picture, saying they were hard workers who were victims of the city''s hasty move to reduce costs.

"These are honest people who were fired. One has three kids. They need their jobs. They may have punched out someone else, but that doesn''t mean they were stealing time. It was too extreme and unfair to fire them," said Bella Montes, a former city janitor who quit in 2008 for family reasons.

Able Business Services President William Berry said he offered jobs to the employees who were laid off, but only one accepted, the article noted.
