MINNEAPOLIS, MN — Arbitration between Teamsters Local 320 and the University of Minnesota has ended, with arbiters denying the union''s claim that a new cleaning practice violates their contract, according to the Minnesota Daily.
Custodians now say that morale has hit a low point, and the arbitration decision is protecting a cleaning method that diminishes the quality of service to the university, the article stated.
According to the article, nearly a year ago, the university''s facilities management department implemented "team cleaning," which assigns a group of custodians to complete individual tasks in a large area; the change was meant to increase efficiency and cut costs.
The university has also said the move to team cleaning was intended to improve consistency, the article noted.
Custodians argue, however, that they are unable to complete assigned tasks with the model presented in their training; as a result, they claim their workload has increased and their level of service has suffered, the article added.
